Shaheed Babbar Akali Karam Singh Daulatpur was born and named Narain Singh in 1880 in Daulatpur, on the Nawanshahar-Balachaur Road (Jalandhar District) to parents Dulli Kaur and Natha Singh Thandi. In 1907, Narain Singh came to Canada at the behest of his uncle Waryam Singh and lived in Abbotsford with his brother Hari Singh, working in the sawmills alongside him.
When the Ghadar Party formed in April 1913 he became a member and he eventually left for India in 1914 to help liberate his country from British rule. Before leaving, he donated his portion of the land on S Fraser Way (where the new Khalsa Diwan Society Abbotsford gurdwara now stands), expressing his wish that if he were to die in the war of independence, a gurdwara should be built there. In Punjab, he formed the Babbar Akali Jatha and convened divans against British rule through armed revolution in Mahalpur, Kaulgarh, Kukkar Muzara and Kot Faatuhi. He also sponsored the Babar Akali Doaba in 1922, a radical newsletter in Punjab.
To honour his memory, a conference will be held on Saturday, September 2nd at the National Historic Site Gur Sikh Temple.
